BANYAN SYSTEMS SHOW BULLETIN
PC EXPO/SPRING '90
June 19 - 21, 1990
BOOTH NUMBER 1870
JAVITS CONVENTION CENTER
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
Banyan Captures Theme of PC Expo:
Announces New Products and Certification Program
to Further Enhance Variety of VINES Server Platforms
Banyan Systems has announced a new program to facilitate the
certification of personal computers as VINES network servers. This
will in turn widen the range of hardware available to VINES users.
The program, which includes a cooperative marketing effort for PC
vendors, will expedite the qualification process by allowing
vendors to evaluate their own systems with test suites developed
by Banyan.
Banyan also added the new IBM PS/2 SCSI systems to its list of
fully supported hardware platforms, further enhancing the user's
freedom of choice in the selection of server hardware. VINES
support for the PS/2 platforms enables users to take full advantage
of the high performance and ease of expansion of the SCSI
architecture.
Banyan's announcement of the MicroChannel Intelligent
Communications Adaptor (ICA) high-performance serial communications
card and the V.35 Adaptor as additions to its hardware line will
also serve to broaden the list of those platforms available as
VINES servers, as well as provide increased flexibility in
configuring a VINES network. The Banyan MicroChannel ICA card
brings all the advantages that the original Banyan ICA card brought
to systems based on the ISA and EISA architectures. The V.35
Adaptor is a serial interface device that enables a customer to
connect an ICA directly to high-speed V.35 modems.
Banyan Interoperates with OS/2 and Supports
LAN Server Applications in the IBM Booth
Banyan is demonstrating VINES support for OS/2 clients and
interoperability between applications residing on LAN Server and
a Banyan VINES server in the IBM booth. This version of VINES
supports coexistence with IBM's LAN Requestor through the 802.2
device driver which allows VINES OS/2 workstations to be compatible
with Extended Edition components such as the Communications Manager
and the Database Manager. Applications such as LAN Server and
OfficeVision can run unaltered on a VINES OS/2 client. In the IBM
booth, an OS/2 client running under VINES will access information
on a LAN Server, illustrating the true interoperability between
operating systems.
Banyan Displays Rich Internetworking Capabilities
in the PC Expo Connections Lab
Banyan will be a strong participant in the innovative Connections
Lab, demonstrating the power of the fully integrated and
distributed VINES environment. Banyan will display TCP/IP routing
support and features to enable users to access other distributed
TCP/IP services. VINES will also internetwork with hosts and
minicomputers and VINES clients will access 3270/SNA and Telnet
Services across the large and complex network of the Lab. VINES
will interoperate with Quick Mail Services for the Macintosh, and
the ability for users to transfer mail between the AppleTalk and
VINES environments will be demonstrated. VINES, which operates
over a wide array of LAN and WAN media including Token Ring,
Ethernet, ARCnet, SDLC, HDLC, X.25, etc., is perfectly suited to
integrate today's multivendor computing environments into true
corporate-wide PC networks.
Banyan to Participate in Press Conference
for PC Expo Connections Lab
On Wednesday, June 20, at 1:00, Banyan will be on hand to speak
with the press concerning the company's involvement in the PC Expo
Connections Lab, and to highlight the complete range of
connectivity solutions which suit Banyan's VINES perfectly for
complex, multivendor environments.
Banyan to Speak in Connections Lab Seminar Series
Banyan will be presenting the fundamental concepts of corporate-
wide PC networking as part of a seriesof 30 minute sessions hosted
by the Connections Lab in Booth #2128. Banyan representatives will
explore the requirements of today's complex, growing networks, and
provide technical and managerial insights into the solutions. The
current trends shaping the networking industry will be highlighted,
and the progression to corporate-wide PC networking from workgroup
and departmental solutions will be illustrated.
The schedule of Banyan seminars is as follows:
Tuesday, June 19 11:30am
Wednesday, June 20 11:30am
Thursday, June 21 12:15pm
New VINES Demonstration Illustrates How to Access
Every Server in a Corporate-Wide PC Network from a Single PC
Visitors to Banyan's PC Expo booth will have an unusual opportunity
to see how Banyan's fully integrated approach to networking allows
convenient access from a single PC to an unlimited number of
servers in a VINES-based corporate-wide PC network. The
demonstration provides an excellent representation of the type of
convenient, overall systems management possible on VINES... simply
by taking advantage of Banyan's StreetTalk global directory
service, MNET network management software, VINES Applications
Toolkit, and Microsoft Windows. With VINES, anything that can be
monitored can also be managed.
The demonstration provides selected real-time graphical and
statistical views of servers (by functional group) on the network.
In this instance, the entire Banyan corporate network with nearly
200 servers is accessible simultaneously in a single screen. Other
screens provide more isolated views of server clusters in the
network, such as in Banyan's engineering development, production,
quality assurance, and education organizations in Westboro and
Marlboro, Mass., as well as in other geographically dispersed
Banyan installations, including those in California, Canada, and
the United Kingdom.
Banyan's Edward Harnish To Participate in PC Expo Panel
Banyan's Edward Harnish, who is involved in Banyan's strategic
marketing efforts, will speak on the panel entitled "Choosing a
Network Operating System." The session is to be moderated by Dan
Spiner, Director of LAN Product Marketing with Glasgal
Communications. The panel is scheduled on Tuesday, June 19, 1990,
from 3:30pm to 5:00pm.
